Portfolio Tutorials

Would you like to prepare an art portfolio for college? Organize your artwork for college art scholarships? Work on observational drawings which are so important for a portfolio? Here's your chance. The FHC Art Department would like to invite you this Tuesday, November 18th to Mrs. Roesslein's room (243) after school at 2:30 to get important information on preparing an art portfolio. MICA Visit Wednesday

Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) is visiting Wednesday!

Action/Abstraction features over 50 key works from major institutions and collections throughout the U.S. and abroad.

The exhibition opens Tuesday–Sunday at 10:00 am. To allow sufficient time for visitors to enjoy Action/Abstraction, the last ticket entry will be at 4:00 pm Tuesday–Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday. On Friday, the last entry will be at 8:00 pm.

National Portfolio Day at Wash. U. is Sunday 10/19

The National Portfolio Day at Washington University's Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts will be on Sunday, October 19, 2008 from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Registration begins at 11:00 am at Steinberg Hall. Pre-registration prior to the Portfolio Day is not required. The program begins with a presentation on Careers in Art and Financial Assistance information in Steinberg Hall auditorium from 11:30 am - 1:00 pm. The portfolio reviews are from 1:00 - 5:00 pm in Steinberg Hall, Givens Hall and Bixby Hall (maps are provided at registration).

INSPIRATION from Learning to Love You More

Learning to Love You More is both a web site and series of non-web presentations comprised of work made by the general public in response to assignments given by artists Miranda July and Harrell Fletcher.

Participants accept an assignment, complete it by following the simple but specific instructions, send in the required report (photograph, text, video, etc), and see their work posted on-line. Like a recipe, meditation practice, or familiar song, the prescriptive nature of these assignments is intended to guide people towards their own experience.

New Exhibit Opening at the SLAM!!

The St. Louis Art Museum is proud to present Action/Abstraction: Pollock, de Kooning, and American Art, 1940–1976

Action/Abstraction features over 50 key works from major institutions and collections throughout the U.S. and abroad. Action/Abstraction features key works by Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, as well as Helen Frankenthaler, Arshile Gorky, Philip Guston, Hans Hofmann, Jasper Johns, Lee Krasner, Norman Lewis, Barnett Newman, Ad Reinhardt, David Smith, Frank Stella, and Clyfford Still among many others. Action/Abstraction looks at the Abstract Expressionist movement and its legacy through the lens of Clement Greenberg and Harold Rosenberg.

"20 Questions to Ask When Choosing a College"

1. What DEPTH OF STUDY is available in the areas I'm interested in pursuing? How many and what kind of courses are offered? How many faculty teach in each program of study?

2. How FLEXIBLE is the curriculum? Do I have the opportunity to design my own program? Can I combine majors or take courses outside my major area?

3. What kind of REPUTATION does the program have? Is the school respected in the art world and by employers? Is the school known primarily for one or two majors? Are the professors known in their fields? Are programs accredited, and if so, by what organizations?

4. Does the school offer opportunities to STUDY ABROAD? Where? In all majors?

5. What SIZE is the art program? How many people are majoring in the programs I want to pursue? What is the student-faculty ratio in my area of interest? How many students are in most classes?

6. Where do STUDENTS come from? Is it a local or regional school, or does it attract students from across the country? How old are the students? Are they right out of high school or are there many working adults or nontraditional age students?

7. Who is on the FACULTY? What degrees do they hold and from what colleges and universities? What about their experience and professional activities? Have they published recently? In what publications? Where have they exhibited their work? How recently?

8. Does the program feature VISITING ARTISTS OR CRITICS so I can meet practicing professionals and learn the latest theories and techniques? Who are they? How many come each semester? How long do they stay on campus? Do they lecture in an auditorium or do they come into the studios and talk and work with students? Do they just teach a master class, or do they work with beginning students as well?

9. Does the school's LOCATION suit my needs and preferences? Are there opportunities to view great art in museums and art galleries?

10. Is there a CAMPUS? What kinds of FACILITIES are available? This includes both workspace and equipment. Do students have independent studio spaces? How much gallery space is available on campus? What kinds of collections are available in the library?

11. What is the school's commitment to new TECHNOLOGIES? As new technologies become available, how quickly are they integrated into the curriculum? Are computers available in classrooms and in residence halls? How frequently does the college update hardware and software?

12. What type of HOUSING is available—apartment style or dorm rooms? Is there studio space for students? How's the food?

13. Is there an active STUDENT LIFE program on campus? What activities and organizations are available?

14. What level of PROFESSIONAL EXPOSURE is available? Are there exhibition opportunities on campus? Off campus? Do I have to wait until my senior year, or can I exhibit as a freshman? Are there student chapters of professional organizations? Are there opportunities while I'm in school for reality-based coursework, such as designing a web site for a local business or community organization?

15. What kind of CAREER DEVELOPMENT services are offered? Are these services generalized or are programs designed specifically for artists? Do career services begin in the freshman year?

16. Does the program arrange INTERNSHIPS? What kind? With whom? Paid, or for credit?

17. Are ALUMNI of the program working in their chosen field? What kind of entry-level jobs do recent graduates have? Did internships help them?

18. What kind of NETWORKING opportunities are available with faculty, visiting artists, and alumni?

19. Is there a GRADUATE program in art, or just an undergraduate major? Does the presence of a graduate program expand the opportunities for undergraduates to have access to faculty and visiting artists/critics of renown? How are studio resources and faculty divided between the graduate and undergraduate students?

20. How does the APPLICATION PROCESS work? What are the costs for tuition, room, and board? Does the school offer financial aid and merit scholarships?

Ethics, Artistic Integrity, and Plagiarism

The issue of artwork that makes use of photographs or other published images needs clarification. While the use of appropriated images is common in the professional art world today, many colleges and art schools continue to stress strongly the value of working from direct observation. In aspiring to college-level work, students who make use of borrowed images should demonstrate a creativity and sophistication of approach that transcends mere copying. This policy is clearly stated thus: “This is demonstrated through manipulation of the formal qualities, design, and/or concept of the source. The student’s individual “voice” should be clearly evident. It is unethical, constitutes plagiarism, and often violates copyright law to simply copy an image (even in another medium) that was made by someone else.” In evaluating portfolios, the Readers look for original thinking. Students are encouraged to create artworks from their own knowledge, experiences, and interests.
Copying work in any medium without significant and substantial manipulation is an infringement on the original artist’s rights and can constitute plagiarism. Teachers and students are strongly encouraged to become knowledgeable about copyright laws. The growth in the use of computer software, scanners, xerography, and photography makes this issue of particular concern. Universities, colleges, and professional schools of art have rigorous policies regarding plagiarism. FHC and the AP program endorses these policies.
